The Story

Deep in the hills and hollows of Harrow County dark creatures lurk.  Some of them are forest critters like you'd find in any other place. But some of these critters are more mysterious and more dangerous than most folk might expect. Some you might even call monsters.

When Hester Beck came to the county folks were pleased. She seemed to have power over these monsters and kept them from making mischief. And things seemed to be getting better; the woods a little less scary and the crops a little more hardy. For a time folk turned a blind eye when livestock started dying in Hester's presence. "There must be a trade," they might say. "What is taken must be given." 

But it weren't long before Hester Beck took too much. And that's when the kindly people of Harrow County took Hester's life.

Emmy Crawford

Emmy always knew that the woods surrounding her home crawled with ghosts and monsters. But on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, she learns that she is connected to these creatures—and to the land itself—in a way she never imagined. 

Bernice Anderson

Bernice has been best friends with Emmy since they met in 2nd grade. She lives with her grandad, Riah Anderson and helps him with his traveling mercantile. 

The Skinless Boy

Emmy's familiar, the Skinless Boy is equal parts body guard and spy.
